60 oz – Purified Water
12 tbs – Fresh Lemon Juice
12 tbs – Grade A Maple Syrup
To taste – Cayenne Pepper
The Master Cleanse is a popular trend that many celebrities turn to in order to lose weight fast. It is also practiced by some in a shorter duration to detox the body. Increments of the cleanse last anywhere from three days to forty, three being more for detox and forty for extreme weight loss. I have personally attempted the cleanse numerous times but was only successful a few of them, with my longest attempt running 14 days. I have seen significant progress and would highly recommend it to others. Take heed though, as this cleanse is not for the faint-hearted, it is not easy and takes a lot of discipline.
How it works
After depriving yourself of substances other than the lemonade drink, your body produces ketones to burn stored fat cells in order to produce energy. Typically your body would convert the nutrients you consume, particularly carbohydrates, to produce that energy. This is a normal metabolic process known as ketosis and the cleanse revolves around this concept. It usually takes a few days for your body to enter ketosis, but once you do, the weight starts to drop quickly.
Before the Cleanse
Before starting the cleanse, choose two goals: a reasonable goal and a stretch goal. A reasonable goal for a beginner is 7 days with a stretch goal of 14 days. Slowly wean yourself off solid food and drinks other than water. The day before the cleanse you should not have anything heavier than broth. Prepare a chart for yourself to monitor your progress.
During the Cleanse
You should start each morning with a mixture of apple cider vinegar (8 oz of hot water, 2 tbs of apple cider vinegar, 2 tbs of lemon juice). Next, make yourself a pitcher of the lemonade drink using the recipe above. Throughout the day you should drink this in replacement of regular meals and snacks, making sure you finish the pitcher at the end of the night. Remember to drink water in addition to the lemonade drink. An optional component to the cleanse is drinking a laxative tea before going to bed. Weigh yourself every few days and record this as well as any other details you like (ex. waist size) on your chart.
After the Cleanse
It is critical that you slowly come off the Master Cleanse just like how you started. Your body’s metabolism will most likely be very slow and anything you consume will probably be stored rather than burned like normal. Follow up the cleanse with broths, soups, soft substances, until your body returns to its normal metabolic state. You should know that the effects of this cleanse are not permanent. You need to continue to eat healthy, live in an active lifestyle and monitor your proportions.
